Hand-Dipped Bayberry Taper Candles

Once a colonial luxury, bayberry candles were prized for their rare, clean-burning wax and distinctive scent of evergreen and spice.
Drawn from the native bayberry shrub (Myrica pensylvanica) that thrive along our sandy coastal woods, early settlers gathered its grey berries and rendered a special, clean-burning wax with yields of 15:1!
We keep that tradition alive, hand-dipping each taper set in small batches with genuine bayberry wax, a little beeswax and a cotton wick. The candles carry the scent of the plant's waxy grey berries - earthy, resinous and woodys - perfect for winter holidays or quiet evenings year-round.
Burn one to honor the season's traditions and invite light and luck into your home - as the old saying goes:
“A bayberry candle burned to the socket brings luck to the home and wealth to the pocket.”

I picked these bayberry candles up at the country living fair this year for our Christmas eve burn. They have a wonderful smell and burned perfectly for 8 hours, start to finish.
Update - we burned the second candle and it was perfect. My friends burned the candles I had given them as gifts and told me they burned perfectly as well (and smelled great!), so I believe that my first experience was simply an accident or a flaw in the wick, who knows but that's why you should always attend to candles.
Lauren contacted me and offered to make it right but, honestly, I don't feel like that is necessary. When the first candle burned so weird it freaked me out and I over-reacted.
Lauren's candles are very beautifully made and are the highest quality. I'm so glad she is making gorgeous candles from beeswax, bayberry and other traditional materials. I have no hesitation and will definitely purchase in the future! Sorry for freaking out!
Original - I bought 4 boxes of these bayberry candles, they smelled amazing and I've already given some to friends.
Then tonight we lit one for our Christmas Eve tradition. It burned just fine for a bit and then the wick just kinda burned through the candle. See the pic. it was nuts. You can see that it happened when the candle was a bit more than half way burned.
I'm worried that I need to contact the people I have boxes to and tell them to NOT burn them.
Elizabeth,
From the photo you shared, it appears the candle was burned in a drafty environment. Taper candles—especially traditional bayberry—are highly sensitive to airflow, which can cause uneven burning or wick failure if placed near windows, doors, or vents. When drafts are present, the flame will pull to one side and burn through the wax unevenly.
All Pine Barrens Post candles are tested for proper burn when used in a still environment. We’re happy to walk you through best burn practices or answer any questions when given the opportunity to do so. If something ever looks off, please reach out to us first. These are beautifully made bayberry tapers. Can’t wait to burn them for the holidays.
