Legend says that upon the birth of her 13th child, the overwhelmed Mother Leeds cursed the baby, turning it into a cryptid that would terrorize the New Jersey Pine Barrens for hundreds of years. The creature morphed into the Jersey Devil and on its way out the chimney, lashed the horrified Mother Leeds and her midwife on the face with its tail.
