Mudlarking is the act of searching riverbanks, shorelines, or other muddy areas for lost or discarded objects of historical, cultural, or personal value. Traditionally, it referred to impoverished individuals in 18th and 19th-century England, who scavenged for items to sell. Today, mudlarking is a popular hobby and form of amateur archaeology, where enthusiasts use careful searching, research, and sometimes metal detectors to uncover artifacts like old coins, pottery, bottles, and relics from past centuries.
